Skinny mixers Malaysian Satay Chicken

Skinny mixers A Little Taste of Asia

One of the most requested recipes, and the reason I put ‘A Little Taste of Asia’ together! This is an authentic Malaysian satay, which is worlds apart from your typical food court satay chicken.

Traditionally char-grilled on the streets of Malaysia and served in banana leaf, this sweet and fragrant peanut sauce with lemongrass and lime leaf undertones – made healthier by reducing the amount of sugar and oil traditionally used. The nut-free variation has also received rave reviews amongst the testing team.

  1. Best dish ever . One of my friend actually improved it even more if possible. She added a tbsp of peanut butter and reduced it more then served it the next day at a BBQ. The men were actually all getting a sausage in bread and filling it with the sauce. They couldn’t get enough of it.

  2. I’d love to know what I did wrong as there is nothing but great reviews. Mine was quite sour and almost had a burnt taste. Wont give up….will try again ; )

  3. Finally made these tonight – can’t believe I’ve waited so long!! Served with the Thai Basil Jasmine rice which is also absolutely delish. Nik thank you so much – you’ve nailed these recipes again.

  4. Tried this on boiled eggs and miss 18m and i loved it.. I do love this recipe with the chicken even more tho. This has got to be one of the best meals ever.. Better Than butter chicken which is my all time favourite meal.

  5. Oh. Gawd. This is amazing! I too have taken far too long to make this. It is delicious as a meal but the sauce would be an amazing dip on its own. So yummy!!!!

  6. I made this for dinner for the first time last night and I can’t believe I haven’t made it before – it was an enormous hit with the family. My 8 year old and 4 year old daughters devoured it, and my extremely fussy 5 year old daughter loved the marinaded chicken without the sauce. I served it with the thai basil rice (first time also) which was also delicious. With such success, we’ll be making this again soon! Thanks for another fantastic recipe.

  7. We LOVED this recipe. It’s so fresh and has amazing flavours. I added some broccoli, beans and baby spinach.

  8. This is my favourite go to recipe for last minute BBQ. I have made this a lots or just the family too. It’s one of those recipes that never disappoints. One comment was “it’s so fresh, nutty but not peanutbutter nutty!” Another “outta this world!” Do yourselves a favour and just do it!

  9. Nik, you’re amazing! Thank you so much for this delicious recipe! I tried to find if anyone had done this in the slow cooker (which is untraditional I’m sure but I have four kids under seven including 8 month old twins…so I’m excused!) and I couldn’t but I gave it a whirl myself! I made the marinade then the sauce then put it all together in the slow cooker (I used diced beef brisket and didn’t brown it first or anything!) for four or five hours on high. I served with some broccoli, bok choy and red capsicum and it was seriously divine! I followed the ingredients exactly, just changed how it was cooked to suit me! Thanks again

  10. This is a really yummo satay recipe. Not the traditional kind, but I think it’s even better! I would buy this book for this recipe alone!

  11. This Satay is AMAZING!!! This is the first time I’ve ever been able to have satay thanks to your nut free variation. Even better my hubby cooks this one (actually he cooks a lot of your recipes Nik – chicken madras, chicken tikka masala, green chicken curry, cauliflower rice, thai basil rice, massaman and tomorrow Beef Rendang!) we love your books and recipes, thanks

    1. Thanks for recommending the nut free variation Jenni! I wasn’t sure before, but I’m going to give it a go for my peanut-allergic husband.

  12. Absolutely gorgeous and sooooo easy to make 😀…
We have HEAPS of satay sauce leftover though – can you freeze it? Has anybody tried it and did it defrost well?

    1. I stir fried some chicken and veg and used the left over sauce with a medium sized can of coconut cream for a quick and tasty curry. other times we just have it twice in a week. It’s so yum.

    2. Carlie did you end up freezing the leftover sauce? I’ve made it tonight and had heaps leftover and jumped on here to see if anyone had asked the question.

  13. We especially love the chicken marinade for this dish and sometimes I don’t bother doing the satay sauce! It too is delicious but the marinade is so quick and easy.

  14. The only satay sauce I’ve had before was either from a jar or little more than peanut butter and coconut milk, so this wasn’t anything like what I was used to – however I will never go back! Even hubby (who’s reviews are usually either “good” or “really good”) extended himself to say “Let’s have this again. There is just so much flavour!”.
    Thanks for another winner Nik

  15. I made this for Xmas Eve dinner, and only got to eat a couple, so I have made it twice since. This is The BEST Satay Sauce I have ever had. I may have even licked it straight off the spoon. So good! Oh, and the actual satay chicken is great too!

  16. This recipe is *A M A Z I N G*!!! I am so in love with all your recipes Nik!
This makes a lot of satay sauce so you can be a little more indulgent 😍

  17. OMG, this is THE most amazing dish I have ever made in my kitchen. If you have not made this yet, wait no longer, get onto it!! Makes plenty of sauce and freezes well.
