Skinnymixer’s Prawn Toasty Bites features in the Snacks & Share section of the cookbook SkinnyAsia 2.
If your favourite part of prawn toast is the prawn rather than the bread, you’re going to LOVE these.
Our Prawn Toasty Bites take all those delicious prawn toast flavours and turn them into crispy little bites made with 500 g of raw prawns, spring onion and classic Chinese-style seasonings.
They’re coated in panko breadcrumbs and black and white sesame seeds, then either shallow fried or air fried until golden and crunchy.
Serve with fresh lemon and our ridiculously good Chilli Crisp Mayo.
What are Prawn Toasty Bites?
Think of them as prawn toast with the bread-to-prawn ratio reversed.
Instead of spreading a thin layer of prawn mixture over a large piece of bread, we’ve turned the seasoned prawn mixture itself into the star.
Each bite is coated in a mixture of:
- Panko breadcrumbs – gluten-free if required
- Black sesame seeds
- White sesame seeds
- Garlic and onion powder
- White pepper
- Salt
Inside, you’ve got loads of juicy prawns flavoured with soy, sesame oil, fish sauce, spring onion, ginger and seasonings.
The Easiest Way to Shape Prawn Toasty Bites
Don’t try to roll the sticky prawn mixture between your hands like meatballs.
Instead:
- Scoop approximately 1 tablespoon of prawn mixture.
- Drop or press it directly into the crumb mixture.
- Use the crumbs to help shape it.
- Generously coat all sides.
- Transfer to a tray.
Once the sticky surface is covered in crumbs, the bite becomes MUCH easier to handle.
Try to keep them reasonably similar in size so they cook at the same rate.
Shallow Frying vs Air Frying
Both methods work, but the finished bites will be slightly different.
Shallow Fried
For the most golden, crunchy result, choose shallow frying.
Cook in small batches over medium-high heat so you don’t overcrowd the pan or dramatically lower the oil temperature.
Once golden on the first side, carefully turn and cook the other side.
Transfer the cooked bites to paper towel to drain.
Air Fried
For an easier option with less oil, use the Air Fryer.
Spray the crumbed bites generously with oil before cooking.
This is particularly important with panko breadcrumbs. Any patches left completely dry may remain pale and floury-looking rather than turning golden and crisp.
Turn the bites during cooking so both sides have a chance to brown.
Dietary & Recipe Variations
SEAFOOD FREE
Replace the prawns with chicken breast and use vegetarian fish sauce. Chicken must be completely cooked through to an internal temperature of 74°C / 165°F.
GLUTEN FREE
Use gluten-free panko breadcrumbs and tamari or other compliant sauces.
LOW CARB
Replace the breadcrumbs with almond flour and replace the cornflour with half the amount of almond flour.
SUPER SKINNY
Halve the breadcrumbs and sesame seeds and choose the Air Fryer method.
PALEO
Replace the breadcrumbs with almond flour and the cornflour with tapioca flour. Use compliant sauces.
VEGETARIAN
Replace the prawns with pressed firm tofu and finely diced oyster mushrooms. Use vegetarian fish sauce, egg white and additional crumb if needed to help bind the mixture.
LOW FODMAP
Use gluten-free breadcrumbs and only the green part of the spring onion. Omit the garlic and onion powders and use a little garlic-infused olive oil when pan-frying.
HALVED / DOUBLED
For a half batch, use egg white only and follow the adjusted mixing method in SkinnyAsia 2. For a double batch, mix the prawn mixture in two batches.
What to Serve with Prawn Toasty Bites
For us, these need:
- Fresh lemon wedges
- Chilli Crisp Mayo
They’re perfect as a snack or sharing plate, but they’d also be brilliant as part of a larger Chinese-inspired feast.
Serve them alongside other SkinnyAsia 2 favourites such as Special Fried Rice, Chinese Honey Chicken or Egg Foo Young.

From the Testing Team
- Linda B. – We had paleo and low carb versions for lunch. Paleo husband is a fan but I think I’d prefer the panko crumbs. Does this mean I have to make a third batch?

- Betty W. – These are a great idea! I did low sodium with half coconut aminos and half fish sauce. Very simple to make. I ran out of black sesame seeds – only had 1/4 left so just used normal.
- Julie H. – Love love love. Just like Prawn Toast but better. Served with home made Seafood sauce
Re heated in air fryer at 140 for 6min remains crunchy and we made Bao tonight. Bloody delicious
- Veronica B. – Tested these today using Orgran Panko Style Crispy Breadcrumbs, wow they are scrumptious
portion control is going to be a problem
Cooked them in the oven 200* 10mins flipped and cooked for another 5mins they puffed up perfectly and tasted delicious, yum 10/10. - Kerry F. – Another half batch made today that I formed into patty size & stuffed into bao with some slaw dressed with the Japanese sesame salad dressing that I shoved more toasted sesame seeds in. When adding the second half of the prawns I did speed to 3.5 & found I much preferred the texture having a few larger pieces of prawn.
- Kate B. – Yummo! Reminds me of prawn toast without the greasy aftertaste
- Alisha D. – Holy prawn cakes
These were sensational!! The sauce was delicious
im not sure if every recipe we try makes the book as this is my first time testing but this MUST go in

- Kerry F. – Yum! They remind me of a frozen product I used to eat when I was a teenager but whoever made them took them off the market & it’s been years & years since I’ve seen them. Next time I make them I’m going to form a few into larger patties to whack in either a burger or sliders cause they’d be fantastic. Got 12 out of a half batch
- Shauna D. – These are better than prawn toasts! Absolutely delicious! This book is going to be my absolute favourite as I’ve pretty much enjoyed everything I’ve tested and I’ve tried a lot.

FAQs
Can I make these in advance?
Yes, you can freeze the patties after crumbing to cook from frozen.
Can I make these into traditional prawn toast instead?
Yes! Spread the prepared prawn mixture onto pieces of bread, press the prawn side into sesame seeds, then shallow fry until golden and the prawn mixture is completely cooked through. This gives you a more traditional bread-based prawn toast using the same filling.
