What are Butter Tikka Prawns?

These Butter Tikka Prawns take inspiration from the rich, spiced flavours of Indian tikka dishes but keep things fresh and simple.

The prawns are marinated in our Indian Masala Paste, then cooked quickly over high heat with butter until juicy and lightly charred. The fresh mango salsa cuts through the richness with sweet mango, crisp cucumber, red onion and a tangy lime dressing.

Best of all, once the prawns have marinated, they take only minutes to cook.

What ingredients you will need

How long should I marinate the prawns?

We recommend marinating the prawns in the Indian Masala Paste for at least 20 minutes.

If you have time, 2 hours will allow the flavours to develop further. Keep the prawns refrigerated while marinating.

What can I serve with Butter Tikka Prawns?

For a lighter meal, serve the prawns and Mango Salsa with a simple green salad.

For an Indian-inspired feast, serve with Golden Coconut Rice and Kachumber Salad from SkinnyAsia 2. Add fresh lemon or lime wedges at the table for an extra burst of acidity.

Dietary variations

One of the things we love about Butter Tikka Prawns with Mango Salsa is how easily the recipe can be adapted to suit different dietary needs.

Seafood Free: Replace the prawns with chicken tenderloins.

Low Carb: Replace the mango with tomatoes and use a compliant sweetener.

Super Skinny: Halve the butter.

Paleo: Use ghee or replace the butter with olive oil.

Vegetarian: Replace the prawns with paneer and use vegetarian fish sauce.

Low FODMAP: Replace the honey with maple syrup and red onion with the green part of spring onion. Use a compliant Indian Masala Paste.

Halved/Doubled: This recipe can easily be halved or doubled. When doubling, continue cooking the prawns in batches so you don’t overcrowd the pan.

FAQs

Can I make the Mango Salsa ahead of time?

You can prepare the mango, cucumber and onion ahead of time and keep them covered in the fridge. Keep the dressing separate and toss it through the salsa just before serving for the freshest texture.

Can I use frozen prawns?

Yes. Thaw the prawns completely, drain well and pat them dry before adding the Indian Masala Paste. Removing excess moisture will help the prawns sear rather than steam when they hit the hot pan.
