Toasted Sesame Seeds

The sesame seeds are the star here, so make sure they’re toasted before making the dressing.

If you’ve bought raw sesame seeds, lightly toast them in a dry frying pan until fragrant, keeping a close eye on them as they can burn quickly.

Allow them to cool completely before blending.

Don’t Blend the Sesame Too Fine

We’re not trying to turn the sesame seeds into a completely smooth paste.

Briefly milling or blending them releases their nutty flavour while leaving some texture in the finished dressing.

Japanese Mayo

We use Kewpie Japanese mayonnaise or the Creamy Japanese Mayo from SkinnyAsia 2.

Japanese mayo has a rich, creamy flavour that works beautifully with sesame, soy and rice wine vinegar.

If substituting another mayonnaise, the final flavour may be slightly different but it will still make a delicious dressing.

More Ways to Use It

Don’t save this one just for lettuce!

Try it:

  • Drizzled over a simple side salad
  • As a dip for cucumber and carrot sticks
  • Tossed through wilted, well-drained spinach
  • Over steamed or blanched vegetables
  • With shredded cabbage
  • Drizzled over a rice bowl

Storage

Store refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks when made with store-bought mayonnaise, or up to 5 days with homemade mayonnaise.

Give the dressing a good stir or shake before serving.

From the Testing Team

  • Linda B. – I wasn’t sure if I liked this when I first tasted it (may have been the texture) but, as the flavours of the ingredients presented themselves, I’m hooked!
  • Veronica B. – Very tasty yum!!
  • Angie G. – Love this salad dressing !! Yumm 😋 The flavours deepen upon being in the fridge. Needs a good stir before using 😋
  • Kaz M. – Kids licked their plates clean! They said it was almost as good as taytah’s Lebanese salad dressing!
  • Angie G. – This dressing smells and tastes amazing. Its creamy, nutty, tangy & scrumptious and just about drinkable 😋 yum yum I toasted the white sesame seeds in a pan, let them cool down before milling.
  • Val W. – I just made this for our salad tonight before we go to a Board Games and Pizza night at church. I’ll make enough salad for our lunch on the way to Hobart tomorrow. We won’t be testing for the next week as we’ll be on grandchildren duty for the first week of the school holidays. I have to admit to using my finger to get the last bits out of the thermie bowl as this dressing is so scrumptious!

FAQs

Can I use regular mayonnaise instead of Kewpie?

Yes. Kewpie gives the dressing its distinctive rich Japanese-style flavour, but another creamy mayonnaise can be used if that’s what you have.

What else can I use Japanese Sesame Dressing for?

It’s delicious with salads, vegetable sticks, wilted spinach, steamed vegetables, shredded cabbage and rice bowls. You can also use it anywhere you’d normally reach for a creamy salad dressing.
