Tips & Dietary Needs
- Protein swap – Chicken thigh is delicious instead of steak.
- No Chicken Stock Concentrate? We highly recommend making Niks Chicken Stock Concentrate for best results! Vegetable stock concentrate will work. You can also replace the water with liquid stock.
- Don’t like prawns – You could try scallop meat
- Boost the protein – Use the higher amount of prawns.
- Dairy-free – We recommend Flora Plant Based Cream
- Low carb/Paleo – Replace cornflour with xanthan gum.
- Go veggie – Use vegetable stock concentrate. Replace steak with 1 tin rinsed butter beans and some sliced Swiss brown mushrooms. Replace prawns with bite-sized green beans.
- Low Fodmap – Omit garlic. Replace butter and oil with garlic infused olive oil. Replace onion with leek (green part only). Use compliant stock concentrate and lactose-free cream. Use compliant Worcestershire sauce or tamari.
How to Serve
- Toppings – Some freshly chopped parsley is lovely on top.
- What to serve with – Serve with your favourite mash and vegetables.
Storage & Meal Prep
- Fridge – Store in the fridge for up to 2 days. Prawns aren’t the best to keep and reheat.
- Freezer – We don’t typically recommend freezing cooked recipes with prawns as the texture changes when reheating.
From the Testing Team
- Michelle R – As a vegetarian, I would never take a second look at a surf and turf recipe however due to the veg variation of this one needing testing, can I say this would be my favourite recipe of the book?!!! Running out of time, I decided to do an early morning cook, and ended up having this on sourdough toast for breakfast! Didn’t have any green beans so subbed edamame which worked great!
- Kellie S – I wasn’t going to do this because I didn’t want to mess with an original surf and turf. Well, hello! This was fricken amazing! I will cook again
Everything was chopped and cooked perfectly as a halved variation in the TM7
- Kaz M – Omg
this is epic! Served it like a traditional surf n turf with salad and chips, sauce on the side. Cooked per recipe though. Easy, quick and delicious!
