Skinnymixer’s French Onion Spice Mix features in the BASICS section of the cookbook The Healthy Mix Dinners 3.
The French Onion Spice Mix is a cookbook exclusive recipe…
Many of us grew up watching our mums add packets of French Onion Soup Mix to countless dishes for extra flavour.
Some of our favourites included pasta, potato bake, dips, roast veggies, and casseroles.
This French Onion Spice Mix recipe lets you ditch the packet—and the additives—without losing that nostalgic taste.
We use this recipe to make the French Onion Chicken Bake and the French Onion Potato Bake.
It is also fantastic on Roast Potatoes and Roast Chicken.
What you will need:
- Onion Flakes – you can buy these in the spice section of your local supermarket. They can also sometimes be called Granulated Dried Onion. As you can see from the picture they have quite a bit of texture and can’t be replaced in this recipe with onion powder. For a Low Fodmap alternative, we recommend drying some sliced spring onion (green part only) to use in the mix.
- Celery Salt – You can buy this from the supermarket too, however the commercial version typically has some fillers in them. We provide variations to make your own celery salt using celery seeds and salt.
Dinners 3 is here to help take a little stress out of the daily ‘What’s for Dinner?’ with 27 NEW Dinner recipes, 7 sides and 4 sweets for after dinner. Whether you are feeding your family on a tight budget, needing to get dinner on the table fast or perhaps trying to be healthier and cutting back on takeaway. Dinners 3 is here to bring some mojo back into your kitchen!

Dietary Variations
For this recipe we have variations for:
✔️ Paleo
✔️ Low Fodmap
To Make Low Fodmap French Onion Spice Mix
The French Onion Spice Mix recipe requires 100g of Dried Onion Flakes which is not FODMAP friendly. We can replace these with dried spring onions, although you may need to dry them yourself. We will need approx. 7.5 Tbsp of dried spring onions to make the recipe once. Feel free to dry more spring onions to use in the future or for other recipes.
To Dehydrate Spring Onions – Thinly slice the green part of spring onions and place on a baking tray or in a dehydrator. Dry in a dehydrator or oven (propped open to lower heat) at a low temperature of between 50–60 ° C/122-140° F for 8-12 hr or until they are completely dry. Now store the dried onions in an airtight container in a cool, dark place.
Follow the variation in the cookbook to omit the garlic powder and replace the onion powder/celery salt.
An Easy French Onion Dip
Our clever testing team immediately wanted to try making French Onion Dip with the spice mix.
Kimberly C used 300 ml sour cream, a huge tablespoon of whole egg mayo and 1 tsp of the French Onion Spice mix to make a delicious dip.
If you are wanting to replicate the famous Kiwi Onion Dip. You can also make it with a tin of long-life reduced-fat cream, 1 Tbsp lemon juice or Malt Vinegar and 1 tsp of the French Onion Spice Mix (to taste).
